Hip Replacement

Living with hip pain can severely affect your quality of life, making simple tasks like walking or sitting uncomfortable. If you're struggling with hip pain, whether from arthritis, injury, or other conditions, a hip replacement might be indicated if you meet certain criteria.

At the Precision Clinic, you receive the same high level of care you would expect from leading hospital groups but benefit from quicker access, in the community, closer to home. Because we are very specialist, we also have more flexibility than other providers in tailoring care to you to ensure your experience and outcomes meet your expectation.

What is Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the worn components of your hip joint with a new, robust artificial hip. This can either be a total hip replacement or a partial hip replacement, depending on your bespoke needs. Your new artificial hip replacement implant is designed to function just like your hip, before you started to experience pain and deteriorating function. After recovery a successful outcome of hip replacement surgery includes improved range of movement, reduction in pain (most patients reach pain free levels) and improved function.

Types of Hip Replacements

  • Total Hip Replacement (THR): This procedure involves replacing both the femoral head (the ball of the thighbone) and the hip socket. It is the most common type of hip replacement surgery and makes up the majority of our caseload.
  • Partial Hip Replacement: Sometimes referred to as a hemiarthroplasty, this involves replacing only the femoral head, which is often necessary after a hip fracture.
  • Hip Resurfacing: Rather than removing the entire femoral head, this option reshapes and caps it with a metal covering, preserving more of your natural bone.

Each type of hip replacement aims to relieve hip pain, restore mobility, and improve your overall quality of life.

Why Consider a Hip Replacement?

If you suffer from conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or developmental dysplasia of the hip, you may experience chronic pain and reduced mobility. A hip replacement can provide relief when other treatments like physical therapy or medications no longer work.

Common reasons for hip replacement:

  • Arthritic Hip: Recognised as the normal/natural, slow and progressive deterioration of joint surfaces as we age. Most people do not know they have osteoarthritis until it reaches a stage where you begin to notice pain or disfunction during activities that once seemed easy. It is often at this point and as your symptoms progress that you will seek investigation and treatment. A hip replacement is the last yet very effective treatment option.
  • Hip Fractures: A serious fall can result in a fracture, particularly in older adults, that may require surgery. As this presentation is following a traumatic event, it is likely the patient would be admitted into the NHS or private trauma unit. We do not offer emergency services at The Precision Clinic.
  • Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH): A condition where the hip joint doesn’t develop properly in infancy, which can cause pain and require surgical correction later in life.

How is Hip Replacement Surgery Performed?

During hip replacement surgery, the surgeon will:

  1. Remove the worn elements of your hip joint.
  2. Replace them with a hip replacement implant, which consists of artificial ball and socket components
  3. Ensure the implants are secure and that your hip functions as expected.

Recovery After Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacements are considered to have high success rates, but it should be noted that recovery varies from person to person. Factors that affect recovery include prior mobility, fitness levels and other health conditions. You can expect to spend a few days in the hospital, followed by a period of rehabilitation. Most people can resume daily activities within 6-12 weeks, though full recovery may take several months.

To ensure a successful recovery, our team of physiotherapists and rehabilitators will support you in reaching your goals:

Physiotherapy: Our team of physiotherapists will meet with you priior to your hip surgery in order to understand your goals and formulate a plan.

On the day of your operation, we understand you may have many emotions and last minute questions. Unlike other providers our rehab team will see you before the operation to run through what to expect directly after the operation, what the plan is to begin moving again and help to reassure any worries.

After the operation our team of physiotherapists will visit you again to begin your post-op range of movement and mobility activities. This will help you with post-op stiffness and allow any change to your discharge planning. Your physiotherapist will work with the nursing and medical team to ensure your pain is well managed and isn't a barrier for you mobilising and returning home as expected.

Pain Management: Controlling discomfort after surgery is crucial to allow for proper healing.

Follow-Up Visits: These are important to monitor the progress of your new hip and ensure there are no complications. Our unique rehabilitation package is designed to maximise your recovery potential and support long-term health outcomes.
